Know the Saudi National Biotechnology Strategy

The National Biotechnology Strategy is a transformative initiative launched under Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to position Saudi Arabia as a global biotechnology hub by 2040. The strategy focuses on four key areas: vaccine development, biomanufacturing, genomics, and plant optimization. By localizing vaccine production, Saudi Arabia seeks to achieve self-sufficiency and become a regional leader in innovative vaccine technologies. The strategy also emphasizes biomanufacturing, aiming to establish a robust local platform for producing biologics and biosimilars, reducing healthcare costs, and enabling global exports. Additionally, genomics plays a crucial role in advancing preventive healthcare, integrating genetic insights into medical practices, and fostering innovation. Lastly, the strategy promotes plant optimization, enhancing food security and sustainability through advanced agricultural practices.

By 2030, the National Biotechnology Strategy aims to create 11,000 high-quality jobs, with a projected increase to 55,000 by 2040. The initiative is expected to contribute $34.6 billion to Saudi Arabia’s non-oil GDP, representing 3% of the total economy. The strategy aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s broader goals of economic diversification, healthcare advancement, and environmental sustainability. Through strategic investments and policy support, Saudi Arabia aspires to lead the biotechnology sector in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by 2030 and achieve global leadership by 2040.
